I'd never known before that the second syllable in the word for vest (in Beijing pronounced something like bèixīr) is a rhoticized version of "heart" -- xīnr, i.e. the full word: 背心儿. I'd never had to write it and always assumed it was some variant of 袖子 (xiùzi = sleeve), even though the tone wasn't matching up and the combination "back-sleeve" would have been a bit nonsensical... That's a pretty tough section, I agree, but I'm pretty stuck on 削下来的 because that's how folks here hear it. The devil seems to be in the 'x' of xià, which is pretty well elided, to my ears.
