For the next week or so — assuming no artist strike, or sabotage from the technical team, or en masse resignations of support staff — the Beijing Sounds studios are pleased to announce a first ever daily series of shorts: Beijing Soundbites.
In the rough-and-tumble press conference announcing the series, Director SYZ stumbled over the question of why — since BJS studios have never even managed to consistently put out even weekly releases for more than a couple of fortnights — why (”in heaven’s name,” you could almost hear the reporter mentally add) would the organization attempt a daily?! On reflection, this was a when-did-you-stop-beating-your-wife type of question: unworthy of response. Why indeed! But since, in dribs and drabs, the director has issued mutterances that stab at the answer, we’ll record a few here just to assuage the burn of curiosity:
- “Because the pipeline is too full — something has to give”
- “Because they think I can’t make it happen”
- “Because our subscribers pay by the post, dammit — I want more! MORE!”
- “Because you eggheads spend too much time thinking and not doing” [addressing the staff]
- “Because the more you imbeciles think, the worse it gets. Sounds, sounds! How hard can it be?” [again addressing staff]
- “Because I wanna have something like the Language Log breakfast experiments“
- “Because we’re not getting any younger, you know” [spoken in a nostalgic moment -- BJS turns two today]
