I used to think xie3 was the right pronunciation because of a native Chinese (Tianjin) teacher friend who corrected me back home. When I came to BJ, I heard only xue3 and observed that the lecturers in my acupuncture class used xue3 100% of the time. These are practicing doctors who use the word most often in their work, eg 气血 补血 流血 止血... I guess for me, if teaching in a language class, I will teach the dictionary pronunciation xie3, whereas in daily life, just go with the flow...
